Car tourism in the South Rim
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located in western Colorado. It was excavated by the Gunnison River, a prominent tributary of the most famous river in the western United States – Colorado. It is a less visited national park, so it is not overcrowded, as elsewhere. It is accessible from both the north and the south. However, the South Rim is better accessible and more accessible to visitors. Even so, it is a 10 km drive to the main road and 25 km to the first city
Pulpit Rock Overlook
The classic tour of the national park is distinctly US style. You drive on a dead end road about 10 km and from time to time there is a parking lot and a 50–100 meter footpath to the lookout. This will take you to the end of the road and back again. One of the first nice prospects is Pulpit Rock Overlook
Cross Fissures View
Another view is of the really dramatic rocks through which the fast-flowing river has penetrated.
Rock Point
View to the other side of the canyon, where there is only a desolate plateau. Although it does not seem that the edge of the canyon is at an altitude of about 2500 meters above sea level. I am fascinated by the power of nature in the form of solitary conifers in the canyon wall
Devil's Lookout
Devil's Lookout is the third of the views relatively close to each other overlooking the rock towers. In the distance you can see the road through the North Rim. From the other side you are only 400 meters away, but by car it is 130km away
Chasm View
Chasm View will show you beautifully even inside this dark and rough canyon. No orange, red and other colors as is customary at the rocks in other national parks of the western United States
Painted Wall View
For me, the most beautiful view was Painted Wall View. The geologist's eye is sure to shed a tear here
Cedar Point
When Cedar Point shows you how massive it is to cut into the landscape. Here he just jumps to the other side
Sunset Point
From Sunset Point is probably the widest view of the Black Canyon. If you have more ambitions than to drive here with short walks to the viewpoints, according to the map there are two descent paths to the very bottom of the canyon. If you have the whole day, it will definitely pay off
