The Anaga Mountains in the NE part of Tenerife are full of deep gorges, steep cliffs and diverse vegetation. Although the Barranco del Río area is one of the most popular with tourists, it is usually not overcrowded, as in the whole of Anaza. At least for now.

Punta del Hidalgo

The starting point of the road is the main road in Punta del Hidalgo. If we arrive by car, we can park at the end of this road with a nice view of the slopes of the Anaga mountains. We will also find the final stop of bus No. 105.

Barranco del Río

We turn off the road onto a narrow path leading along banana plantations. We descend to the bottom of the gorge.

We pass two smaller buildings. From here, a narrow footpath leads along the gorge along the left slope in the direction of the ascent.

Barranco del Río

The low December morning sun creates an attractive play of lights and shadows on the slopes of the gorge. Clouds form over the Anaga ridge, which usually hides the top parts of the mountains during the day.

During the ascent we pass several rock overhangs. Erosion has created many holes and rock arches in the volcanic material.

After a steep climb to the rocky ridge, we gradually reach two very nice lookout points, from which there is a beautiful view of the rugged coast of Anaga.

View

From the second perspective, there is indeed a very aerial view of the various formations that create the waves of the Atlantic in contact with the rugged coastline.

Chinamada

We slowly reach the top of our ascent, the small village of Chinamada. The rugged cone of Roque de los Piňos (548 m above sea level) remains below us, on the opposite slope you can see several buildings of the village of Batán. Refreshments are available in Chinamada, but the local bar is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Mirador Aguaide

From Chimanada we return about 400 meters above the cliffs to one of the most beautiful vantage points in Tenerife. In addition to the Anaga Mountains, the town of Punta del Hidalgo can also be seen beautifully, the start and finish of our journey, in the NE direction, the top of the almost iconic Monte Taborno peeks out.

Early evening

Descending back is as difficult as usual. We reach the bottom of the Barranco del Río after sunset. The reward is a pleasant evening atmosphere of the coast.
