Nobody would almost believe that right next very busy Leh is vast wasteland offering original views of the town and its surroundings from a number of almost four thousand high mountains.

Eastern suburbs of Leh

Earlier people were going from Leh to Sabu (or too Saboo) village along the shortcut through barren mountains, which almost nobody does at the time of the asphalt. Not very distinct pathways fortunately remained so tourists who do not know where to go for a trip can explore unnamed four thousand high mountains, from which there are really interesting views of Leh or go across the pass about 3,800 asl and reach the oasis Sabu on foot, which may also be a good acclimatization hike..

There are two possibilities of the trip entry, so you can make a circle if you want. You can either start from the „landfill“ valley that begins at the curved road just above the bus station. But it is pretty boring way for the beginning in the piles of garbage that should have been hidden to tourist eyes. Or you can ascent to the small pass from the easternmost suburb of Leh, nicely visible for example from Namgyal Tsemo gompa.

Remote oasis

From a small pass there is a nice view of the „far“ north of Leh and the way to a more demanding whole day hike to Phyang.

The way to the pass

You descent from the pass to the main wasteland valley, which is surrounded by outlook hills. There are at least five mountains suitable for ascent in the surrounding area.

Indus valley

Life-giving Indus surrounded by green fields under Leh slowly runs through the wide arid valley. On the horizon there is a small oasis of the village Stok, the seat of the last Ladakh´s king and the starting point of the trek to the most popular mountain in the area – Stok Kangri.

One of the scenic hills

This walk is mostly in weathered terrain full of debris and rocks. You can ascent to the outlook peaks intuitively rather than along the trodden paths.
