Catinaccio or Rose Garden of the Dolomites
A beautiful hike from the Karerpass road saddle over two mountain passes and the small peak of the Col de Ciampac (2316 m).
Karerpass saddle
Early in the morning we arrive at the Karerpass saddle (1745m), where we leave the car. The weather is kind to us and we set out for more experiences. We climb a steep path through the forest. Tourist marking according to the map with the number 552 and the name Dolomites world heritage geotrail.
Christomannos' eagle
On the way we pass the Rifugio Paolina hut. We will stop for a short break at the bronze eagle monument, which was dedicated to the politician and pioneer of South Tyrolean tourism, Theodor Christomannos. The statue measures 2.5 m.
Under Rotwand
A comfortable path along the contour leads us along the wall. The Rotwand peak (2806m) towers menacingly above us.
Ascent to the saddle
Here begins the most demanding part of the ascent, the path is sometimes made up of wooden steps anchored in the rock, created to facilitate the journey. Once we have completed the first section of wooden stairs, there will be an almost vertical iron ladder of approx. 2 metres.
Passo Vajolon saddle
The climb was worth it. Passo Vajolon saddle (2550m). We sit and enjoy the views of the Marmolády ridge.
On the way to the Sella del Ciampaz saddle
After filling up on sugar and gaining strength, we continue along the narrow path. We often stop and admire the alternation of green color with the paleness of the rocks, which creates stunning color contrasts.
Rifugio Roda di Vaèl
One last ascent to the small peak of Col de Ciampac (2316 m) near the Roda di Vaèl hut. And hooray for the car.
