Leh – Manali road III. part: From the tent camp Sarchu awaits you 80 kilometer long section, during which you will overcome the main ridge of the Himalayas through Baralacha la pass (4,891 m asl). This way has a special charm especially at the beginning of the season, when there are large snow drifts around the road and you have a little bigger feelings of adventure than in late summer. In addition, you can get off in the pass and hike through the valley of river Chandra to Lahaul valley (this is preferred during the high season, when is water level in the river lower).

Sarchu

After you arrange all the formalities at the checkpost, you can set out towards Baralacha la pass. Sarchu is actually no village, but only several tent camps a few kilometers long road.

Himalayan road

The road connecting Leh to Manali is better every year, plus there is ongoing major project to extend it, which also has a positive effect on the speed and security. But be sure to encounter with animals here also in the future.

From Kyelang begins the ascent to the pass Baralacha la. At the beginning, to the old moraine of the glacier.

Above the moraine

Above the moraine is nicely visible the river Lingti, along which you will ascend to the pass. The surrounding mountains are at about 5500 meters above sea level.

The lake on the way

Before the final ascent to the pass begins, you will see a nice lake on your left.

Mountain adventures

The ride up to the pass is becoming really interesting with increasing altitude and beginning of the season. The surrounding snow drifts and trucks fallen into the valley, however, alert drivers to be very careful here.

Before Baralacha la pass

Driving in almost five thousand meters above sea level has its own charm, but there is not enough place for avoiding. You can see that over the Himalayas is far more rainfall than in the mountains further in the north, where there was no sign of snow although they are at greater height.

Baralacha la pass

Finally, the car scrambles to the highest point of this stage to the main Himalayan ridge. But perhaps you will be a little disappointed. You may expect here impressive sceneries, but it is more an upland plateau. But an interesting fact, however, is that three rivers spring here – Lingti along which you ascended, Bhaga, along which you will descend and Chandra, along which leads a nice trekking route with beautiful lake Chandra Tal.

The spring of river Bhaga and Suraj Tal

Only a short distance below the pass is sacred lake Suraj Tal, the source of river Bhaga. Of course, it is frozen at the beginning of the season and the area around is covered with snow.

Descend to Zinzig Bar

In high season, when there is no snow, you can see piles of rubble, through which leads this mountain road. At the bottom of the valley lies windy and inhospitable place – Zinzig Bar. Horizon is dominated by six thousand meters high peaks.

Zinzig Bar

It is possible to have a snack or at least tea in Zinzig Bar. The surrounding views of jagged mountains are very nice.
