An interesting spectacle in the city center
The area known as Kamenná kolonie, or Kamenná čtvrť or Kamenka, is a settlement in the middle of Brno. It is located in an excavated gravel quarry on the right bank of the Svratka River. The colony consists of two parts – the first is crammed at the bottom of the quarry and the second rises along the quarry almost to the top of Red Hill. The colony consists of about 130 historic small houses with gabled roofs and miniature courtyards.

The best view of Kamenka is from an elevated rocky promontory above the quarry. From this place you can see not only the best-preserved workers' colony in Brno, but there is also a view of other Brno landmarks, such as Špilberk Castle, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, the exhibition grounds and the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on Mendel Square.
Under the Red Hill
This is the top of the Stone Colony. The narrow curved streets do not pass further into the city at their upper part, they end with private lands below the top of Červený kopec.
Alleys
Kamenka was created in an abandoned quarry in the 1920s and 1930s. Workers from the Brno brickyards began to build houses here. In the 1960s, the state offered emergency colonists housing in newly built blocks of flats, and their place was mostly taken by students from Slovakia and northern Moravia, apart from Brno. The growing demand for attractive places with a unique atmosphere caused students to be replaced in the late 1970s by artists and bohemians, who found inspiration for their work here.
Alleys
The fastest way to get to the colony is via Kamenná Street. The journey from the Merciful Brothers Hospital public transport stop takes about ten minutes.
