The fortified town of Tulum served the Maya as the main port for their mighty city of Cobá, 50 km away. The castle is built on a cliff more than 12 meters high and dominates the entire historic complex. Outside, there are ruins of the palace and several temples. Besides, there are also beautiful beaches and lots of black iguanas.
