Lake Kaweah (213 meters above sea level) is actually a dam built to protect the fertile California basin and the city of Visalia from seasonal or lightning floods. The river of the same name drains a large area of the Sierra Nevada. The lake itself is located in a very picturesque landscape surrounded by grass covered with rocky ridges. It is possible to go for walks or fishing, but most tourists will see the lake and its surroundings only on the way to Sequoia National Park.
