Frederiksborg Castle was built in the early 17th century by Christian IV. on the ruins of the original castle, which this monarch had demolished, and which was founded 40 years earlier by his father Frederik II. It stands in a lake on three small islands and looks a bit like a wedding cake. The castle is the largest and most important building of the Nordic Renaissance. Danish kings were subsequently anointed in the local chapel. The gardens are Baroque in style and date from the early 18th century.
