When you say Tibet, most people think first of Dalai Lama or majestic Potala in Lhasa. But the most beautiful monastery, typical Tibetan architecture and majestic fort, however, can be found in Gyantse (4 030 m asl). All this is surrounded by beautiful countryside. In addition, local old town is relatively distant from new parts, so there is much nicer atmosphere than for example in Khasa or Shigatse. The center of the old town is formed by the monastery Palcho Gompa (sometimes called also Pelkhor Chode) surrounded by high walls, in the middle of which is situated Kumbum – the largest chorten throughout Tibet.

In front of Tsuglakhang

Once you walk through the massive gate in the walls to the monastery Palcho and spin dozens of prayer wheels along the sidewalk, you come directly below the great building of Tsuglakhang. Already from here you can see the biggest chorten in Tibet – Kumbum.

Buddhas

The interior decoration in Tsuglakhang is amazing. Locals fill here the candle with yak lard and leave money in a lot of places.

Interior of Tsuglakhang

The interiors of Tibetan monasteries are very colorful and different from those for example in Ladakh.

View from the roof of Tsuglakhang

From the roof of Tsuglakhang is a very nice view of not only neighboring giant chorten Kumbum, but also straight up of another important building Tratsang and massive fortification around the entire monastery.

Kumbum

Největší atrakcí celého klášteru Palcho, respektive Gyantse je obrovský několikapatrový čorten Kumbum. Při jeho průzkumu budete dlouho dokola stoupat kolem spousty soch Buddhy.

Panoramic view of Gyantse

The most beautiful part of the tour is at the end of the ascent to Tratsang. The higher you are, the better is the view. But the best view is from the roof of the monastery building. Below you, you will see not only the entire monastery but also the old town up to the imposing fortress Gyantse Dzong.

Descent from Tratsang

You can descend back to the entrance different way. You might be impressed not only by architecture and beautiful views at the monastery, but also by local strongly religious Tibetans.
