Compared to its southern neighbors, Germany cannot boast of extensive mountain ranges, yet the piece of Alps on the border with Austria is worth seeing. In particular, the promontory south of Salzburg, an area named after the town of Berchtesgaden. The pleasant spa town of Bad Reichenhall is an ideal starting point for excursions. There are beautiful mountains around, whose altitude is below 2000 m, but due to the starting height, hikes on the surrounding hills can be quite challenging.

Hike first: from Bad Reichenhall to Hochstaufen (1771 m)

Full-day trip with an elevation gain of more than 1300 m. Below the peak is the possibility of refreshments in the cottage Reichenhaller Haus.

Most of the way to the top there is a beautiful view of the surrounding alpine ridges. They are usually in a slight haze, but even so, one's breath is taken.

Second hike: from Bad Reichenhall to Predigstuhl (1613) and Hochschlegel (1688)

To Predigstuhl you can take the marked path, which starts at the Saalachsee dam, or (if your legs hurt after the previous hike) you can use the cable car.

On the left the neighboring peak Hochschlegel (1688), in the background Hochkalter (2608). For those who have taken the cable car and do not just want to ride your ass, from Predigstuhl you can go to the saddle to the Schlegelalm tourist hut and climb up to Hochkalter, it's about an hour, of course, cant as a pig :-)

Historic wooden colonnade in Bad Reichenhall

After a demanding hike, there are plenty of opportunities to relax in the town center. After all, as the name suggests, it is a spa. The town itself is worth a visit, in addition to the Gothic church, the main attraction is the museum of salt production, which has a centuries-old tradition.

Hike three: a round trip through alpine pastures

Just south of Bad Reichenhall is Lake Taubensee, from where a marked hiking trail leads, introducing visitors to the local alpine pastures and farms. There are several variants, we go a circuit measuring about 12 km with an elevation of about 700 m. The road is called Almerlebnispfad.

Almerlebnispfad: Mordau-Alm

The first farm on the road with the possibility of refreshments. Very touristy, so we continue uphill.

Almerlebnispfad: saddle below Karspitz (1640 m)

Here, too, we reach the ridge along the way and there are beautiful views of the surrounding hills around again.

Almerlebnispfad: Moosenalm

Here is the right farm, in the house there are cows in the front, in the back there is a kitchen and a pantry, where there are loaves of handmade cheese. We have a themed lunch: bread and cheese.

Königssee

Because the hike through the mountain farms is not so difficult, there is some time left after returning to Taubensee, and a short distance away is the famous pearl of the Bavarian Alps: Lake Königssee. Normally this is the idea of a day trip (in the town of Schönau on the shores of the lake you can rent boats, or you can take a ride on the lake with a larger cruise ship, and not far from here is the Kehlsteinhaus or Hitler's famous Eagle's Nest), but we don't have another day. At least we will walk a few kilometers along the lake, hidden in a narrow gorge between the mountains (here the peaks are already over 2000). Impressive view. But more tourists than would be healthy, and we are here at the end of September.
