Manaus is the capital of the federal state of Amazonas in Brazil. The greatest expansion of the city was in the years 1890 – 1920, when the city was the main source of rubber.

Manaus

The city of Manaus is located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in northwestern Brazil, near the confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon rivers. We can find a lot of attractions in the historic city center. From theaters, historic buildings to the houses of the richest people from the „Rubber Boom“ era, when the city was the main source of rubber for the whole world to the time when synthetic rubber was invented.

Amazon Theater

This icon of the city, which still hosts concerts and theater performances, was built in a combination of Art Nouveau, Baroque and Rococo style. The theater can accommodate up to 700 spectators. The mosaic on the floor of the theater is composed of more than 12,000 pieces of various woody plants. 36,000 pieces of tiles were used on the dome of the theater, and in the overall view we see the Brazilian flag on the dome.

Confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon rivers (Solimões)

The Portuguese „Encontro das Águas“ is a meeting of the waters of the Rio Negra and the Amazon, located a few kilometers from the city. Due to the difference in temperature, speed and density of both rivers, there is only a gradual mixing of both rivers in the length of about 15 km. At the confluence of these rivers, therefore, the line between the water from the Amazon and the water from the Rio Negra is clearly visible.
