Bärwälder See is the largest lake in Saxony. It was created by the flooding of huge lignite mines. For a very long time, it was fed by the Spree River. Now you can find several swimming options here, as well as a harbor with houseboats. The dominant feature of the lake is the huge Boxberg power plant.

Information about Bärwalder See

The lake is located on the northeastern edge of Saxony, not far from the Polish border. In the south is the city of Uhyst, as the main exit to the region around the lake. Boxberg in the north. Behind it is the gigantic power plant of the same name. The third exit is Jasua with a parking lot, campsite and boat port. You can read detailed information about the past and the construction of the lake from the information boards.

Swimming in the Bärwalder See

As Bärwalder See is man-made, the shores are stony and not very suitable for swimming. Fortunately, there are three beautiful sandy beaches: The largest beach is north of the town of Uhyst The second beach is east of Jasua harbor The third beach is north of the lake in Boxberg

Marina and houseboats

At the former village of Jasua, which disappeared during mining, there is now a boat harbor and, as another attraction, the possibility to stay in houseboats. For cyclists, the cycle path around the entire lake, which is about 20 kilometers long, can be interesting. So, on a nice summer day, combined with swimming at all three beaches, a nice trip

Boxberg Power Plant

Repulsive for some and interesting for others, the industrial monument is the gigantic power plant in Boxberg – a landmark that you will see from almost everywhere.
