One of the most interesting hikes around Nauders is the so-called Kaiserschützenweg. It starts at the Norberthöhe saddle and leads you through a series of viewpoints to the Innu canyon and the Finstermünz gorge. At the same time, there are monuments to the First World War in the form of caves, trenches and other military buildings. You will have views of the bottom of the gorge lying more than 600 meters below you.

Viewpoint Schöpfwarte

From the Norberthöhe saddle, it is only about a 600-meter walk along a wide road before you reach the first viewpoint, the Schöpfwarte (1,436m). In these places, the Inn is still only 400 meters below you. On the left is the famous mountain Piz Lat (2,808m). You are still in Austria, but almost the entire view already falls into Switzerland. Be aware that the Swiss telephone network may tune in here. The lookout itself is like a small castle tower.

Innblick viewpoint

The second Innblick viewpoint is only two hundred meters away. Here is a view of the Finstermünz gorge. On the left is Switzerland, on the right is Austria – Inn is the border here.

View inside the gorge

Other unofficial viewpoints are directly from the edge of the rock face. Be very careful here – one wrong step can mean a very long fall into the deep.

Mountain views

The path then climbs slowly through the forest. The clearing offers a view of the mountains on the Swiss side beyond the gorge.

View of Nauders

Then there is the view of Nauders, or rather the mountains behind Nauders, including the highest Plamorder Spitze (2,985m)

Entrance to the military caves

Then other attractions begin in the form of caves created by soldiers as shelters and observation posts.

Military Caves

Life in the caves certainly couldn't have been comfortable, especially in the winter season.

Views of the Innu Valley

There are two paths leading from the military buildings, definitely take the one that leads along the edge above the gorge.

Securing the way over the gorge

The path is secured in these places, so you don't have to be afraid to complete it even with children.

Dramatic views of the gorge

As the route continues to climb, the views become more and more dramatic. The road peaks at an altitude of 1,654 meters (that is, 250 meters higher than the pass and more than 600 meters above the level of the Innu)

Early evening Nauders

From the edge of the gorge, you will then descend to a grassy saddle, from where it is possible to continue both to the Nauders Fortress and through the forest back to the crossroads to Norbertshöhe or Nauders. The circuit itself is less than six kilometers long with an elevation gain of less than 300 meters.
