Although most of Gotland's coastline is relatively flat and without steep cliffs, there are a few nice exceptions. One of them is the cliffs on the east coast of the island, near Herrvik. The height of the cliffs is not dizzying, but they can be relatively „touched“. Sea erosion undermines the rock and huge rock blocks are gradually collapsing or sloping into the sea. The whole scenery is easy to explore, including the possibility of descending under the cliffs to the water surface. The attentive observer will not miss the remains of millions of years old marine life trapped in the rock.

Cracks

At the edge of the coastal cliff, one must be careful not to fall into one of the cracks. The limestone breaks off here and falls into the sea.

Rock mushroom

Somewhere the sea left relatively nice formations, in this case a rock mushroom. Erosion has so far caught up with the whole block. But that will change over time anyway …

Reef

The most effective collapsed blocks are the size of a smaller house. In addition, the coast is full of smaller and larger overhangs, which you can walk under (of course at your own risk and with a good dose of luck). Behind all this is the power of the sea and the surf.

Green sea

Even a view of the green waters of the Baltic is not entirely to be missed. The surf zone is full of life.

Ship traffic

Frequent fishing barges floating around the reefs and accompanied by flocks of seagulls head to or from the port of Herrvik, which is ingeniously hidden in a small bay in the northern part of the peninsula.

Overhangs

Those more daring and insane enough can descend to the surface and walk under the overhangs, or study the rock itself …

Fossil

And the more attentive will reveal a large number of fossilized remnants of ancient life, some 425 million years old.
