Emerald Bay is part of the second deepest lake in the United States, Lake Tahoe, which is of glacial-tectonic origin and lies in the northern part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, at an altitude of 1,897 meters above sea level. Its waters are so clear that it can be seen to a depth of 23 meters. In the middle of the bay lies the island of Fannette Island. The bay is a popular recreational and tourist destination.
