The only real attraction of dusty Uyuni is less than three kilometers distant train cemetery. Old historic locomotives and wagons are left here to their destiny as silent memory of the golden age of mining, when Bolivia wanted to get rich on minerals mining and rail routes to the Pacific. Most tourists visit this place at the beginning or end of the salar tour.

Rail service began in Uyuni in about 1890, but around 1940 most mining companies went bankrupt and there ceased to be of use for these beautiful machines.

Vandalism

Not only the force of nature damage the trains, but also human vandalism. Trains are painted, signs are engraved on them etc. .. and garbage are everywhere …

The surrounding ridges

Not a single tourist is tempted by four thousand high mountains spanning above the windy plains around Uyuni. They seem to be so close, but it is more than eight kilometers as the crow flies and in addition, it is quite monotonous hike.
