Winter kingdom
The Giant Ice Cave is also one of the largest ice caves in Europe. Its entrances are located at an altitude of 1418 and 1458 m. There are several domes to see. The oldest ice is estimated to be 500–600 years old. The cave is one of the greatest wonders in the Alps. The tour of the cave takes about an hour. 800 meters are accessible from the 2,700 meters of the cave. Every year, the ice in the cave increases in size. So the ice doesn't melt here as fast as it forms. The temperature is –3 ° C / + 3 ° C. Shooting only after consultation with a guide.
Cableway
From Obertraun, the caves can be reached on foot A or on the B cable car. There are two caves, Ice Cave and Mammoth Cave. We chose an ice cave, as there is none in the Czech Republic.
The first ice
After about 20 minutes of the tour, we reach the first massif of ice.
The biggest monument
The dominant feature of the cave is this 8 meter high ice stalagmite.
Climb to the floors
The cave has several floors and the stairs are sometimes frozen
Footbridge over the dome
At the end of the tour, you walk across the footbridge, where the drama is increased by the fact that there is a waterfall that shatters on ice.
