Or a smaller defensive fortress near the city of Mahón
The fort was built by the British at the beginning of the 18th century (1710 to 1726) by the bay on the south side of the mouth of the Mahón harbor and served the British, French and Spanish armies. It can currently be visited as part of an individual tour.
Entrance to the fortress
Fort Marlborough is very low profile. Its entrance is hidden among buildings, but marked with a sign like all monuments in Menorca.
Corridors
The fort is largely built at ground level, i.e. it does not protrude much above the surrounding terrain. On the contrary, most of the spaces are underground. The base is a long corridor that goes around the entire perimeter of the fortress.
Division of the fortress
A circular corridor surrounds the elevated bastion.
Bastion
There is a large bastion in the central part of the fortress. At its foot is a buried tunnel, which was the original entrance to the upper platform. Currently, you can get there from the outside.
Defense function
Cannons were placed along the edges of the fortress. From the upper platform of the bastion there is a view of the surroundings and especially of the neighboring tower fortress Torre d'en Penjat.
