In 1842, beer was born in Pilsen, which was to conquer the world in a few decades. Although, as usual, the beginnings were not easy and Plzeňské pivo did not have a very good reputation. On October 5, 1842, Josef Groll brewed the first batch of bottom-fermented lager, which differed from other types of beer still brewed in Pilsen by slow bottom fermentation, thus establishing a new beer category called „pils“.

Pilsner Urquell

Beer that gave its name to the whole world.

It is quite lucky that crowds of tourists do not flow into this brewery, so one can really enjoy the tour. Although beer has been brewed in Pilsen since the end of the 13th century, it was not until modern times that beer became famous here. The tour begins by getting on a bus and going to a bottling plant – literally a factory. Then the tour goes in the direction from beer production. Even Pilsner Urquell has his own school, where he teaches brewers to brew beer. So anyone can sign up. I was a little disappointed that today Pilsen is no longer made from hops, but from granules. The reason is that it has a higher aroma and is moldy. In Pilsner Urquell, not only this beer is bottled, but also Gambrinus beer and occasionally Kozel and Radegast beers. Then the tour continues with the old brewery, which is really impressive, and moves on to the new brewery. The tour ends down underground in the cellars, which are 9 km long. Beer used to be stored and cooled here. The ice has lasted here many times a year. Today, only a small part of beer is preserved here, which is fermented in oak barrels. Pilsner Urquell cares about tradition, so here we can still see almost extinct crafts, such as formans and coopers. Yes, some still deliver beer with a horse-drawn carriage and coopers make classic oak barrels. The end of the tour ends with a tasting of beer in the cellars and I can honestly say that I didn't drink such a good beer for a long time. Unfortunately, the filtration and pasteurization of beer will do its thing and deceive customers by 2/3 of the taste that beer has.

Historic entrance gate

This gate was built in 1892 and thus became a symbol of the brewery. We all know her from beer coasters.

In the brewery

View of the brewery. In the distance you can see the water tower. Thanks to the quality of its water, this beer has such an exceptional taste

Brooming

Final broom. I then recommend going to the brewery in the brewery or somewhere in Pilsen and comparing the taste with the original.
