Five kilometers southeast of Kvilda, near the settlement of Františkov, there is a reminder of cruel historical events. After February 1948, many people tried to flee abroad. Local smugglers helped them cross the closed border in the confusing area of the Šumava borderland. The most famous transfer trail led through these places.

Monument on the transfer trail

The monument is located on the site where a night shootout with members of the StB took place in May 1950. The smuggler Franz Nowotný, called Kilián, managed to escape, but unfortunately not two other members of the group. This German from Šumava is the most famous smuggler and his story became a model for the film „King of Šumava“. WHO TRANSVERSED THEM WITH THE DEPLOYMENT OF LIFE.

From the site at the Pivní hrnec rock formation, a police patrol opened fire on a group that, under the leadership of Kilián, crossed the Teplá Vltava. The shot Kilián escaped, but it was his last of more than 2,000 trips across the border.
