Originally a Gothic water castle rebuilt into a Baroque-Classicist chateau with a bastion fortification

Castle building

A border fortress was built at a strategic location on the Moravian-Hungarian border. In the 11th century a wooden lowland water castle, which was replaced by a stone castle in the 13th century. Gradually, a two-tower Gothic palace was added and subsequently converted into a Renaissance anti-Turkish fortress. After the chateau fell to Maria Theresa's husband František Štěpán Lotrinský, it acquired its present-day late Baroque appearance and became the summer residence of the Habsburg family, thus gaining the status of an imperial residence. The chateau has been a national cultural monument since 1963 and has been open to the public since 2007. A border fortress was built at a strategic location on the Moravian-Herran border. A fortified square terrace with corner turrets is built around the chateau, which is surrounded by a square dry moat with access via two bridges. Not much of the original equipment has been preserved, the well-preserved Chinese Hall with its walls covered with wallpaper with painted Chinese motifs, a Baroque chapel and a ceremonial staircase are worth a visit. The space houses a museum of ceramics and part of the space is also used for concerts and other cultural and social purposes.
