Beautiful milky cloudy water, breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, majestic peaks rising directly above the lake. It is not for nothing that Lago di Sorapis is said to be one of the most beautiful and magical lakes in the Alps.

Dolomite Lago di Sorapis

Trek along trail 215

Our trip started in the Austrian village of Sillian, from where we drove less than 35 minutes across the beautiful Missurina lake to the starting point, i.e. parking lot at Passo Tre Croci. The parking lot is located next to an abandoned hotel, and considering the parking space, it really pays to arrive as early as possible. Directly at the pass, there is also the option of staying at the B&B Hotel Passo Tre Croci Cortina . We left the parking lot around 9 in the morning along road 215. The first part of the road was gravel, pleasantly wide and led through the forest. However, after about half an hour it was necessary to cross a scree field and the path began to narrow slightly and climb slightly. After about an hour, the path turned into a more demanding hike with a steeper climb, which was supplemented by several secured sections. The first secured sections were the iron stairs, which helped us to overcome the most difficult elevation in a rather pleasant way. After the section, which was strengthened by a wooden bridge, followed a narrow footpath secured by a fixed steel cable, which led over an almost vertical slope, however, the view of the mine was moderated by bushes. The secured section, including the stairs, was not long at all, but it can be uncomfortable for people suffering from vertigo. One gentleman in front of us retreated and preferred to go back towards the parking lot. After a few more minutes, we arrived at a crossroads that led either to the Vandelli mountain hut, where one can have a pleasant refreshment, or directly to the lake. It should be noted that even though the journey was more demanding at times, the views were truly breathtaking. In places it was possible to see the peaks of Tre Cime or Lake Missurina.
The lake itself was incredible, we spent a little over 2 hours at it, walked around it, stopped at a hut for a drink and followed the same path back to the car park. All in all, we walked 12 km, the journey to the lake took a little over 2 hours. We walked back for about an hour and a half. Of course it is individual. We walk more slowly, enjoy the journey, like to look around and take a lot of photos. Anyway, it was one of the nicest treks we have ever done. So proper hiking shoes, don't be afraid of heights and at least a light condition and hurray for Lago di Sorapis :)
