Arucas is a village in the northern part of the island of Gran Canaria. In the 15th century, the city was completely destroyed and then rebuilt. The main „attraction“ of the city is the magnificent cathedral. However, Arucas is best known for the local rum, which is produced in a 19th-century factory.
Historic centre
The historic city center consists of beautiful colorful houses with cafes and shops. Again, this is a less visited locality, so don't expect tourists here. The cafes are occupied mainly by local cordial people.
Cathedral
The neo-Gothic Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is the most important historical and artistic monument in Arucas. This church was re-consecrated to the cathedral after a reconstruction that took place in the early 20th century. It is a landmark of the city, which is currently closed due to ongoing reconstruction work.
Peace and quiet
Arucas has a pleasant, peaceful atmosphere. Again, this is a less visited locality, so don't expect tourists here. The cafes are occupied mainly by local cordial people.
Driving around the city
Arucas has one specialty and that is the incredibly narrow streets. Although there are no explicit entry bans, the roads are so narrow that driving a Ford Ka is a masterful task. So it pays to park on the outskirts of the store and walk to the center.
Parks and other attractions
The Park de las Flores, full of exotic plants and sculptures, is also worth visiting in the center of Arucas. Inside the park is the city museum. In the background, you can see the volcanic hill of Montaña de Arucas, which can be reached by car and offers beautiful views of the surroundings. There is also a botanical garden near the town.
