Plague Column in Karlovy Vary

The High Baroque column with the sculptural group of the Holy Trinity was probably established by the Countess of Vrtba in 1716 on the market square near the former town hall in the historic center of Karlovy Vary. Thanks to the gratitude that the spa town escaped a large plague epidemic in 1713.

The contract for the construction of a plague column according to the approved model of the building was concluded on 19 November 1714 between the parish priest František Böhm, Karlovy Vary City Hall and the Stonemason's stonemason's workshop of Oswald Josef Wenda.

The main motif of the sculptural group is interesting for its iconographic concept. On the column we find two of the main saints of the Order of the Crusaders of St. Augustine and St. Adalbert and also a lantern in the shape of a six-pointed star. The central theme is the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. This theme is quite exceptional for Baroque columns of this type, and in Bohemia we will not meet the Coronation of the Virgin Mary with the Holy Trinity on any other Baroque column.

Statue of St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters, dressed in armor. He has a coat draped over his shoulders, which is tied in a knot on his right shoulder. A striking helmet adorned with three lips sits on his head. He holds a banner in his right hand. In his left hand, he puts a fire from which he puts out a burning house at his feet.

Thanks to the very sloping terrain, the column is located on a relatively high foundation of granite blocks. The column is bordered on the edge of the terrace by a wrought iron decorated fence.
