The hill that stretches over the beautiful Lake Hallstättersee and from its top is a great view of the glacier covered Dachstein. The ascent to it takes about three hours. During the ascent, we can observe the already mentioned Hallstatt Lake from a bird's eye view, which unfortunately is not visible from the top.

Road through the woods

There are at least three ascent routes to Sarstein. We started in the free parking lot near the village of Potschen. Initially, the path leads through the forest, but there are also places from where you can see Lake Hallstatt and the hills around it.

The first views

In some places, views of the mountains and the lake open up in the forest. The ascent is very intense and so every such view and stop will come in handy.

Sarsteinalm Bad Goisern

After about two to two and a half hours, you will reach these two cottages. You can buy beer here and there is a spring with drinking water right on the path in front of them. From here, about 200 meters remain to the top.

View from the cottage

In the middle of the holidays, many species of flowers bloomed here and many butterflies flew. The views from the saddle of the mountain huts were worth it!

High Sarstein

After less than three hours, we reached the top. From the parking lot we climbed around 1250m on a hot summer day. Despite the beautiful weather, the surrounding peaks were shrouded in a gentle haze.

Dachstein

The Dachstein is in the palm of your hand from here. Unfortunately, the haze clung to him all the time.

Night sky

We spent the night near the Altausseer See. The views from the sleeping bag on the clear sky above us completed another wonderful day in Austria.
