The Leaning Tower (Torre pendente) is located in Pisa, Italy. Together with the Duomo, the Baptistery and the adjacent cemetery, it stands in the Piazza dei Miracoli, also known as the Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo). The sloping tower with a circular floor plan, built of white marble, serves as a bell tower. It is almost 56 meters high. Construction began in 1173, but shortly after construction began in 1174, it began to tilt. The reason is the shallow foundations in soft rock.
