Place Carrara

Carrara is famous for its marble. It is such a specific raw material that basically nothing compares to it. That is why the masters of the ancient world already sculpted from Carrara marble, and this stone is still highly valued through the Middle Ages. Blocks of pure marble are essentially carved out of rock in the mountains above the city. Both in the surface quarries that shine white over the city and in the deep galleries inside the hills.
