Ancient Mayan town of Palenque is nestled in the foothills of Chiapas mountains and is surrounded by the remains of virgin forest. Palenque competes with its Guatemalan rival Tikal for the post of the most beautiful Mayan ruins. Most visitors agree that local buildings are perhaps a little nicer, but there are crowds of tourists, which takes away from the atmosphere a little. Anyway, Palenque should certainly be the „mandatory“ stop your journey around Mexico. Moreover, only a few kilometers away there are other very nice places – waterfalls of Agua Azul and Misol Ha.

Templo de la Calavera - Temple of the Sk

Just a few meters from the entrance awaits you the first pyramid – Temple of the Skull, which is not so impressive compared to other buildings, but it is interesting by famous skull inside. So climbing the stairs and looking inside is certainly worthwhile.

Pyramid half overgrown with jungle

From this view of the Temple of the Cross is clearly visible how much work is necessary to reconstruct or dig out the pyramids overgrown with the jungle. Lots of Mayan towns are still hidden in the jungle and even well-known sites such as Palenque are not yet completely uncovered.
