The capital of the Cook Islands
The capital of the Cook Islands Avarua has a little more than five thousand inhabitants and in translation means two harbors. Considering the local conditions it is a busy place, but do not expect here any high-rise buildings and that's a good thing. The most interesting and photogenic place here is the harbor, from where there are nice views of local green mountains towering practically just outside the town.
Maungatea Bluff
Directly above Avarua rises mighty massif of Maungatea (340 m asl). There is a path leading to it as well, but the signage is very poor, so there is quite high chance to get lost even after a few steps in the jungle.
Ikurangi
From the port you can also see the ridge connecting majestic peaks of Ikurangi (485 m asl) and Te Manga / Needle (653 m asl) – the highest mountain of the island.
Fish shop in the Avatiu harbor
There is no problem to buy fish here.
Catamaran
You will enjoy the views of the traditional ship in Oceania – catamaran, which can be overcome quickly also very shallow waters.
Department of Justice
The road is dominated by scooters – most practical vehicles on this small island. You can see the modern building of the Ministry of Justice in the background.
Shop in Avarua
Some shops are nicely decorated here.
Catholic Cathedral
The cathedral is modern and not so interesting.
Old Christian church and cemetery
The old whitewashed church with an adjacent cemetery gives more picturesque impression.
