The southernmost part of the island of Samos is perhaps the least visited of the whole island. There are practically no beaches and a mountain ridge over 700 meters high rises directly from the sea. If you want to make a trip here, turn off the main road in the town of Pirgos and go on a roughly twenty-kilometer trip through the two beautiful mountain towns of Spatharei and Pagondas. Along the way you will find a beautiful view of the island of Samiopoula

Mountain ridge view

As you approach the south of the island of Samos from the west you will see a massive mountain wall in front of you. We will basically go around this ridge on this trip

View of Kerkis from Spatharei

We reach the pretty town of Pirgos, where we leave the main road and climb to the first mountain town of Spatharei. Just in front of it opens up beautiful views of the highest mountain on the island of Samos – Kerkris, which fills the entire west of the island. We are at an altitude of about 600 meters above sea level.

Spatharei

Spatharei has a picturesque center and a very nice church. The roads here are traditionally very narrow. You still know above the city is another church very picturesque with a beautiful view

View of Pagondas

The road disappears in the woods for a few kilometers so that we then emerge on the other side of the mountain ridge. In front of us we have the historic town of Pagondas, which lies a little below about 250–300 meters above sea level, but is much larger than Spatharei

The main square in Pagondas

Like every Greek mountain town, Pagondas has narrow roads and several churches. The main square acts as an oasis, where there is a cool shade under the mature trees. Here you will find cafes with sitting Greeks

Way back

From Pagondas it is only 5 kilometers to the main road and the lowlands around the airport
