The most famous monastery in the Indus v
The most often visited monastery in the Indus valley, which is just twenty kilometers from Leh, looks like a miniature of Potala. If you get here really early in the morning, you do not meet here crowds of tourists – more like only meditating monks. Apart from the breathtaking view of the monastery from the bottom you will like a huge, 15-meters high, statue of Buddha occupying two entire floors of the building and the stunning views from the roof of the monastery.
The upper part of the gompa
Gompa occupies in its twelve floors the whole mountain (see the introductory photo of the photoreport). But almost all the way up leads a small road that saves about 60 altitude meters to tourists.
The central courtyard
From the main courtyard there are already beautiful views of the Indus valley. In the morning you can see here a lot of monks.
Beautiful colors
Gompa has a monumental impression and it is beautifully colored.
15 meters high Buddha
The biggest attraction in the monastery – Buddha occupying the whole two floors of the gompa.
Library
Library is a very interesting room that preserves ancient scrolls.
Paintings
The monastery is full of paintings depicting scenes from the Buddha's life.
Indus valley
Views from the roof of the monastery are wonderful – a few kilometers to the south on a small cliff above the Indus is situated a beautiful monastery of Stakna.
Ridge of the Stok mountain
Beautiful ridge dominates the west behind Indus valley. At the beginning of summer it is still pretty snowy.

At the end of the summer the ridge looks significantly more barren, only small glaciers make it lighter. Matho monastery located in an oasis under the mountains may be also an interesting trip destination.
Indus oasis
View to the north towards Shey monastery shows the most eloquently how important is the Indus for life in Ladakh. Its life-giving oasis contrasts with the arid high mountain desert all around.
Wasteland of the Ladakh´s mountains
View to the east is quite depressing – just barren mountains with no sign of life.
