Article Lakes in Bosnia

This article is dedicated to several lakes that fascinated us the most. I will start with Lake Prokoško, the most visited and liveliest in terms of tourism.

Not far from the town of Fojnica lies in the Vranica mountains at an altitude of 1635 meters above sea level, Lake Prokoško. The lake is of glacial origin, the maximum depth of the lake is up to 13 meters. An endemic species of mountain newt lives here.

There are a large number of wooden cottages by the lake, originally used by pastoralists, now more tourists, there are pubs where they will offer you food and drink or you can buy lamb here. Live even on a spit. On the shores of the lake you can camp, picnic, relax, enjoy. There are benches and seating, fireplace. The slope above the lake is overgrown with blueberries, if you have a taste, you can pick it. There are a lot of them. Not far from the lake is another campsite if you want to be away from wooden houses and people.

From a distance, Lake Rama looked very tempting and interesting. The turquoise color of the water contrasted with the exposed golden beaches, and the lake attracted closer exploration. Lake Rama was created artificially in 1968 by damming the river Rama. The largest island of Ščit, on which the Franciscan monastery stands, was connected to the mainland by an embankment.

The magic of Lake Rama stands out especially in the summer, when there is less water and many islands, peninsulas and golden sandy-clay beaches appear. On the shores of the lake you can stop peacefully, have a picnic, camp and enjoy.

The largest glacial lake in Bosnia, located in the valley of the Cvrsnica Mountains. Above it rises the highest mountain of this mountain range, Pločno, with its 2228 m above sea level. If you are not afraid of off-road driving, I recommend taking a trip to Pločno. At the top is a still functioning radar base and along the way you will come across so many beautiful views that your head will pass.

The lake is not very deep, the average depth is only 1.9 m.

Boračko Lake is the largest natural lake in Bosnia, probably of glacial origin. It lies at an altitude of 398 meters, surrounded by mountains. Its water is clear and emerald green.

The emerald green water of Lake Boračko attracted people to swim with its transparency. So we stayed here for a few days and spent most of our time in the water. It was really hot in July and the water on the surface was beautifully warmed by the sun. You can stay here in two camps or in the eco village Boračko, where in addition to the area for camping, it also offers accommodation in simple wooden cottages.

Another glacial lake lies below Mount Šator in the mountain range of the same name, from which it got its name. Lake Šatorské lies at an altitude of 1488 m and in summer its temperature reaches up to 17 degrees Celsius.

You can spend the night at Šatorské Lake in peace and without any problems. A little further on is a mountain hut, which unfortunately did not work at the time of our visit and was closed. You can park and sleep with her. We slept in a car on a large plot just above the lake, which probably serves as a parking lot. In the morning, the sun woke us with its rays when it first peered over the mountains.

Before we left, Šator prepared another surprise for us. Our last Bosnian breakfast was suddenly drowned out by the sound of a helicopter. A moment later, it flew quite low over our heads to head down to the lake, where it was drawing water to extinguish a nearby forest fire. Before we had breakfast and packed up, he flew over us a few more times. The end of our holiday was enriched by an extraordinary experience.
