Ascent from the Colca valley
Trek to the source of the Amazon I .: The first day of the march to the source of the Amazon awaits you from the town of Tuti (3,805 m above sea level), lying in the valley of the river Colca, to the plateau Altipláno. The only major attraction along the way is the abandoned Inca village of Ran Ran. Accommodation at an altitude of over 4,700 m above sea level will test the right of your acclimatization.
Square in Tuti
The monument-fountain with the Indian on the square in Tuti is one of the two attractions you will find here. In the shops around, however, you can still replenish supplies and, in complete peace, on the benches, sanctify and gather strength for the relatively rough business that you have in front of you.
Church in Tuti
Even the local whitewashed church is very nice and typical for the local region.
Fiesta in Tuti
From the city center, head straight north on the road between the fields and then uphill to the first plateau. If you are lucky, you will meet a local celebrating a local fiesta.
View of the Colca river valley
From the first viewpoint it is nice to see into the local conditions of the fertile valley of the river Colca. The river itself is not visible, as it is hidden in a canyon cut directly into a rocky ridge. You can't even see the center of Tuti, which is again masked by a terrain fault. In these places, you are slowly approaching the four thousand mark.
A valley leading to a ghost village
After ascending from Tuti to the beginning of the valley leading to the ghost village, the path for a long time is quite obvious. The mountains towering in front of you are actually just the end of the plateau 500 meters above you, where you will have to climb in a moment.
Ran Ran Valley
Finally, the Ran Ran valley opens almost completely, and you can already see the winding path to the plateau on the horizon.
Meeting of the third kind
Here on the Altiplan, it is far more likely that you will only meet cows and llamas than humans on the trek. This also applies to this relatively well-known area.
Abandoned Inca village
After half an hour's walk through this valley of ghosts, you will reach a dilapidated Inca village. She didn't have to be very small at the time.
View of Ran Ran
After a half-hour climb, the Inca village is deep below you. The view of the whole valley is quite nice.
In the camp 1.
After you climb the plateau, probably the most boring part of the whole trek begins – in front of you is a long march through a desolate landscape without much prospect. At the very beginning, you have to pay close attention to the path, or decide which variant to go. The classic „normal“ road still goes as if through a flat valley and over time it turns more to the west, so that after about 100 meters it descends to the main valley leading from the Mismi volcano. If you want to take a more challenging and navigationally difficult route across the Pacific and Atlantic divisions, follow a less distinct path leading almost north to a less pronounced valley. Right by the water you will find a fence (approx. 5 km from the viewpoint of the village Ran Ran), which is ideal for camp number one at an altitude of 4,710 m above sea level.
