Uzhhorod (Ukrainian Uzhhorod), a city with about 117 ths. population, is the center of Transcarpathian Ukraine. It lies on the river Uh, right on the border of Ukraine with Slovakia. The city is an increasingly popular tourist destination, there are architectural monuments and attractions of various periods (Uzhhorod Castle, synagogue, several museums, theater, university, Greek Catholic Cathedral, open-air museum of folk architecture …). In the years 1919–38, Uzhhorod, as the administrative center of Subcarpathian Russia, was part of Czechoslovakia.
