Skopje is divided by the Vardar River in the northern predominantly Muslim part and by the southerly settled rather Orthodox Christians along with government buildings and business centers. The most interesting is the old Turkish part of Čaršija with mosques, cafes and bazaar. The Turks ruled here for 520 years. The largest and most decorated is the Mustafa Paši Mosque from the end of the 15th century. One of the symbols of Skopje is the Turkish Kameni bridge, 214 meters long with 13 arches from the times of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror. On the northern shore stands the Kale Fortress. Christian monuments represent the monastery and the church of Sveti Spas.
