New fortress in Karkyra

The dominant feature of the capital of Corfu, Karkyra, are two fortresses – New and Old. The new fortress is a Venetian fortress built on the hills of St. Mark in Corfu between 1572 and 1728. The current buildings that exist in the fortress were built by the British during their reign of the island (1815–63). At the top of the castle there is a stone building used for defense and a brick building, which in modern times functions as the headquarters of the Corfu naval station. Admission to the fortress is free.
