The Skeiðarársandur plateau, an area plagued by frequent sandstorms, lies below the Skeiðarárjökull glacier. In 1996, the eruption of the Grímsvotn volcano destroyed the whole area. The eruption melted much of the glacier and sent down three trillion liters of water rolling in a five meter high wave that swept away 7 km of road and demolished several bridges. From the plain there is a view of the highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur.
