Lake Hawea is a large lake created like most of the Great Lakes on the South Island by a massive glacier during the Ice Age. A place called The Neck is just a mile from the even larger Lake Wanaka. A beautiful hike leads from the lake to Isthmus Peak (1,390 m above sea level) located on a ridge between the two lakes.
