One of the most popular tourist destinations in Lesbos is the town of Petra. Mainly thanks to the church of Panagia Glikophilousa on a high solitary rock, which makes the city a very famous landmark. If you climb a few dozen stairs, you will get a very nice view of the surroundings and you can see the interior of this interesting church. In the evening, the whole rock is lit and it has a very pleasant atmosphere.

The alley of the old town

Directly opposite the small pier, an alley leads to the busy center of Petra, so that after a few tens of meters it becomes a completely quiet alley. This paved path leads along the rock to which you will soon start climbing.

Under the church

Night ascent

Go to the church twice, both during the day for views and at night for a fairytale atmosphere. Surprisingly, how many people are in Petra, only a fraction come here.

Castle or church?

The church itself is still surrounded by a high wall, so you feel that you are climbing a castle rather than a tabernacle.

The historic center of Petra

Before slipping behind the walls directly to the church, enjoy the beautiful view of Peter and its surroundings. Directly below you is a small city center and there is also a recognizable Greek flag flying on the pier, from where this short but very nice walk begins.

Petra

Petra is built in a very convenient location. It is right by the sea and also on a large plateau supplied with water from the surrounding mountains.

Picturesque beach in Petra

Only at the very northern end of the bay is a very nice beach, which is surpassed by an arid rock ridge by 150 meters.

View of Lepetymnos

Probably the most beautiful view is in the northeast direction to the highest mountains of the island, led by Lepetymnos. Also visible on the mountain slope is the village of Petri, a popular place to watch the sunset.

View of Roundi

The view to the south is also interesting. Behind the endless groves of olive trees, filling this fertile valley, the beautiful mountain village of Lafionas can be seen on the horizon and the interesting rock cliff Roundi above it. From Petri there is even a marked hiking trail.

By the church

After enjoying the views, finally walk through the gate in the wall and finally see the church. In addition to the nice interior, there is also an interesting short walk around it with a view of the portholes in the wall on the other side towards Anaxos.

Direction Anaxos

From the windows in the wall you can also see towards Anaxos, but it is still hidden behind a small mountain ridge.
