As a region of Malta, the island of Gozo has its capital Victoria, also known as Rabat. The city is located in the very center of the island and its dominant feature is a large medieval citadel sitting on a hill, so it provided an ideal strategic view while guarding the island.

Cittadella-Katidral ta Għawdex

On the hill near the city center you will find a large medieval citadel with preserved fortifications and small stone streets. At the entrance to the citadel stands the majestic Għawdex Cathedral overlooking the small square. On the square we will also find the courthouse and a demonstration of a medieval prison.

Fortified loophole

You can walk through the citadel without paying the entrance fee, it is only to the visitor center or museum. It is also possible to enter the section managed by volunteers for a voluntary contribution. You will find a fortified loophole, catacombs, which were also used during World War II, or give you a glimpse into the former grain silos that were later used as water reservoirs. An interactive tour will take you along a narrow footpath through the vessels themselves. And they even have a guide for rent in Czech.

A view of the whole of Gozo

There are walkways along the entire citadel, from which there is a view of the entire island of Gozo. Since it is not so big, you can really see all the way to the sea.

Alleys around the basilica

Again, we couldn't resist going to the winding alleys with small entrance gates, which are mostly covered with a mat of woven straw, so that the heat does not get inside.
