The town of Mdina or „Quiet Town“ is a suitable destination for a half-day trip to Malta. It is smaller than Valletta and thus allows you to enjoy the local atmosphere more in peace. As the former capital of Malta, it undoubtedly deserves your attention thanks to the magnificently preserved old town, which is fortified with stone walls.

Entrance gate

The town of Mdina, named after the Sicilian Arabs as early as 870, is undoubtedly worth a visit as a whole. However, we focused on the old part of it. The entrance to the old fortified town leads over a stone bridge to a massive gate, which opens the entrance as if to another world of the Middle Ages.

Cathedral of St. Paul

We had the opportunity to walk through the city at 7 o'clock in the morning, when it was just slowly waking up, so we could enjoy the authentic atmosphere of deserted stone streets, which led us to the center of the fortified town to a small square, where the church of St. Paul.

St. Roque's Chapel-aka Our Lady of Light

In the adjoining alley to the right of the church of St. St. Paul peeked at us. Roque's Chapel also known as Our Lady of Light. In its corner, a statue of the saint himself to whom this Christian church is dedicated looks down on passers-by.

View from the walls

At the end of the alley we passed around St. Roque´s Chapel stretched out a small Bastion Square park with benches and a view of the castle stretching around the city like a stone hoop that would not allow the city to swell an inch. The distant view provides a view of the north of the island and with good visibility it is possible to see all the way to the islands of Comino and Gozo.

Medieval houses

Walking through the old town, you don't know where to look first and whether to stop and admire the architecture of the churches or get carried away by the winding streets and discover what you will find behind the next bend. Every house that fits into the whole concept exactly like a puzzle in a big jigsaw puzzle is unique and the places are based on their decoration.

Gardens under the walls

The local gardeners ingeniously used the space under the walls, where there used to be a moat defending the city from invasions. Currently, under the walls in the shade you can walk through a green park, which in the warm climate of Malta must make the work to keep, especially during the summer season.
