A tour of Rožmitál pod Třemšínem

One of the most important personalities in Rožmitál was the composer Jakub Jan Ryba, who worked here from 1788 to 1815 as a cantor and regenschori at the local school. It was here that his extensive work was created – about 1,400 compositions of various genres, from songs and arias, oratorios, cantatas and masses, of which the Czech Christmas Mass is one of the most famous. Ryb's life in Rožmitál was bitter. He had 13 children and did not know how to feed them. they did not meet with understanding at the then conservative lords. He experienced misunderstandings, hardships and suffered from a torturous disease. Depression and exhaustion resulted in his life taking place on April 8, 1815 in a grove above the settlement of Voltuše. There is also his mound.

The Church of St. John of Nepomuk on the square from 1729 was radically rebuilt in 1904–1905. Of the original appearance of the church, only the masonry of the church choir has been preserved, where the plaque installed in 1852 with the statement of Jakub Jan Ryba: To be better, observe your actions daily and examine them!

The town is dominated by a Renaissance chateau, formerly the property of the famous family of Lions from Rožmitál. In the middle of the Brdy forests, Oldřich of Buzice founded a castle around 1250 and began to use the nickname from Rožmitál. The Renaissance chateau from the 16th century stands on the site of a castle from the 13th century. A prismatic Gothic tower with bay windows on three sides has been preserved from the original castle. Since nationalization in 1948, the chateau has fallen into disrepair, and renovation work is currently underway.

The town hall was built on the site of the original burgher house. Its present core dates from 1837. At that time, the clock was transferred to the town hall tower from the old, abolished gate, which was formerly located below the square in Palackého Street. Formerly a one-storey building was added to another floor and expanded in 1936. Near the town hall is the Podbrdské Museum. Permanent exhibitions are dedicated to Jakub Jan Ryb, the aristocratic family of Lions from Rožmitál and folk arts and crafts in the Rožmitál region.

Podzámecký rybník is a pond of the Rožmitál pond system on the Skalice river. Looking over the pond, there is an interesting scenery of the town with a castle. To the northwest of the pond is the original old town – Old Rožmitál. Here stands the Parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which is one of the oldest monuments in the city. The church houses the original Baroque organ from 1750, played by the composer and author of the Czech Christmas Mass, Jakub Jan Ryba. Here, also in 1796, his famous Czech Christmas Mass „Hey Master“ was heard for the first time.
