The largest mining depression in the Ore Mountains
Červená jáma is a mining depression (pinka), which is part of a historic mine in the district of Hřebečná, located about 3 km north of Abertam in the Ore Mountains. It is a remnant of tin mining, which took place here in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first documented report on the Red Pit (Rote Grube) is from 1545.
240 meters long depression
It is a depression about 240 meters long and 40 meters wide at its widest point, which reaches a depth of over 20 meters. Its dimensions surpass the more well-known Wolf Pits on the nearby Blatenské Hill. The tin ore of cassiterites was mainly mined here
Overgrown walls
Mining was terminated in these places as early as the 18th century, so the walls gradually collapsed and the area grew overgrown. In the 16th century, the local mine surpassed the other tin mines in the Ore Mountains in terms of quantity and quality. In addition to tin, iron ores were also mined here.
The whole depression can be bypassed
The entire space is secured, so it can be carefully bypassed the entire elliptical depression. In the vicinity there are several other smaller depressions and the remains of period buildings.
Good access and refreshments
The place is easily accessible on foot and by bike along marked routes from Abertam or Horní Blatná. An educational trail leading in the area is dedicated to the history of local mining. Excursions can refresh themselves in the local striking bistro (open Wednesday – Sunday).
