Iceland is a popular tourist destination for travelers from all over the world. Endless glaciers, monumental waterfalls, steep cliffs inhabited by birds and much more make Iceland diverse. However, the most interesting of all is the geological activity, which can be observed here in many forms. Where to go for these geological processes?

Víti crater and Krafla volcano

The first geologically interesting place in Iceland is the area around Lake Mývan. Below the peak of Krafl, which is the dominant volcanic complex of the same name, is the Leirhnjúkur lava field. It originated less than forty years ago and to this day there are visible manifestations of volcanic activity.

Hverir

Not far from Lake Mývan there is another remarkable place. This is the geothermal area Hverir, where the accompanying phenomena of volcanism can be seen.

Myvatn

Lake Mývan is a really important place in terms of volcanology. There are rootless craters on the rugged islands and peninsulas that make it up.

Lava tunnels

For a closer understanding of geological processes in Iceland, it is also good to visit one of the many lava tunnels. Several of them can be entered with a guide who will explain the origin of these caves to you in detail, and others are freely accessible at your own risk. Whether you choose any of these options, in both cases it will certainly be an unusual and enriching experience.

Where now?

The above sites are only a fraction of what Iceland has to offer in terms of volcanic activity. So if you are going to go to the island of the Norman gods, do not forget to pack a geological guide to Iceland and plan a visit to these and possibly other geologically interesting places in advance.
