A place of war victories and losses
World War I has affected almost the entire world in history. 38 states were involved in the war. In the woods near Compiègne, two Franco-German armistices were signed in a train car. The first happened on 11 November 1918. At the second signing on June 22, 1940, Hitler deliberately chose this place to atone for the German humiliation of the First World War. The site contains several monuments.
