Kynžvart Castle

In the years 1821–1839, the castle was rebuilt in the style of Viennese classicism. The outstanding Viennese architect Pietro Nobile had to respect a number of chancellor's designs and demanding requirements. Implementing the plans was not a cheap affair. In September 1822, the banker Salomon Rothschild provided Metternich with a personal loan of 900,000 gold (ie, about € 45 million), repayable for 12 years with five percent interest. A favorable loan paid off to the bankers; six days later, all five Rothschild brothers received the hereditary title of Austrian free lord. The loan, in turn, helped Metternich rebuild the Kynžvart chateau, invest capital in the large estates in Kynžvart and Plasy, and invest almost half a million gold in extensive purchases of jewelery, coins and art collections.
