An active central volcano with an altitude of 818 meters with numerous craters dominates the whole area. The caldera, about 10 kilometers wide, was formed 100,000 years ago, as evidenced by numerous formations of rhyolite tuffs. In the recent past, it was active from 1724 to 1729, most recently from 1975–1984. The caldera is crossed by a north-south fault system, which is the cause of all volcanic activity in the region.
