Near the small settlement of Fossholl, the icy blue river Skálfandárfljöt, rising from the south of Vatnajökull glacier, flows quickly in basalt horse-horseshoe canyons through a pair of cataracts. The larger one is Goðafoss, where Ϸorgeir (the interpreter of the laws of historic Alsace, in year 1000 decided that Christianity is to be Icelandic official religion) destroyed pagan sculptures and tossed them into the waters of the waterfall.
