The volcanic lake is part of the Baikal Rift Ditch Zone, which originated 55 million years ago. Chuvsgul is one of the oldest lakes in the world, the 14th largest freshwater lake in the world and is the deepest Mongolian lake (depth of 262 m, water volume 381 km3). Lake water accounts for up to 2% of the world's freshwater. Its length is 134 km and the largest width is 39 km.
